New Discovery 8 Types of Cancer Associated Due to Obesity

The International Agency for research on cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization, has added 8 types of cancer for those who have previously been linked to being overweight or obese. IARC also confirms previous conclusions, that being overweight is a risk factor for cancer of the esophagus, colon and rectum, breast (in women post-menopause), kidneys, and endometrium. IARC also says overweight or obesity can increase the risk of breast cancer in men, spread-large B cell lymphoma, and fatal prostate cancer.

The BMI (body time index) and cancer risk

To assess the relationship between cancer risk and weight, 21 international experts see more than 1,000 study. Most of the studies used body mass index (BMI) to determine if people are overweight or obese.

Susan Gapstur, PHD, MPH, American Cancer Society Vice President of epidemiology research, served on the panel of the IARC experts. He said there are many ways that being overweight increases the risk of cancer, which may be different for different types of cancer:

"For example, especially in menopausal women, fat cells is an important contributor to sex hormones, such as estrogen, which plays a role in the development of endometrial cancer and breast, as well as some other types of cancer. But there are also other mechanisms that are considered important for many types of cancer. These include mechanisms that are associated with normal glucose metabolism and insulin overload, immune responses, and inflammation associated with obesity, "said Gapstur.

Get and stay at a healthy weight

Eating right and getting enough physical activity can help you get and stay at a healthy weight. The American Cancer Society recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity (level of brisk walking) or 75 minutes of strong activity (level running) each week, preferably spread throughout the week.

You should eat at least 2 ½ cups of vegetables and fruits each day. Consumption of red meat (beef, pork, or lamb), bacon, sausage, luncheon meats, hot dogs, and other processed meat. Instead, more focus on fish, poultry, and nuts. Choose whole grain breads, pastas, and cereals. Limit sugary drinks, desserts and other foods high in sugar.
